Summary The summary should be the first paragraph of the essay.
	Excellent 25 pts	Satisfactory 10 pts	Poor 0 pts
Summary 25 pts	Excellent First sentence includes the name of the text, name of author, and the main idea. The summary clearly and accurately reports all of the key points in the student's own words.	Satisfactory First sentence includes the name of the text, name of author, and the main idea. The summary may miss some of the key points, but is mostly in the student's own words.	Poor First sentence has errors with either the name of the text, name of author, or the main idea. The summary miss most of the key points and/or is not in the student's own words.
Response The body of the essay should include ideas from the student which respond to the article.

Response 25 pts	Excellent There is more response than summary and more of the student's ideas than ideas repeated from the article. Ideas are reasonable/logical and respond appropriately to the article. Ideas are developed in complete detail. Connect between ideas is clear and the essay is coherent. Most ideas are developed in complete detail. Connect between most ideas is clear and the essay is generally coherent.	Poor There are more of the author's ideas than the student's ideas. Ideas may not be reasonable/logical and/or respond appropriately to the article. Ideas are not developed in complete detail. Connect between ideas is often unclear and/or essay is often incoherent.
