Narrative Writing

Oranization of Story Events	Poor Events are out of order and do not unfold logically. The writing is unclear so that finding the beginning, middle and/or end is challeare out of order and do not unfold logically.	Fair Events are in a logical sequence, but unfold unnaturally. The beginning, middle and end are harder to identify and one or more may be missing. Some missing and/or common/repetitive transition words.	Good Events are organized in a sequence that unfolds naturally and logically. The beginning, middle and end are obvious and easy to follow. They appear in a logical order and include the use of story transition words.	Excellent Events are organized in a sequence that unfolds naturally and logically. There are smooth transitions between each event. The piece begins with a hook or a lead that captures the reader's attention.
Narrative Techniques	Poor The writer did not use any narrative techniques.	Fair The writer attempted to use descriptive language or dialogue, but used some words and/or punctuation incorrectly.	Good The writer utilized dialogue and description in the piece.	Excellent The writer utilized dialogue and description in the piece, which enhanced the story and made scenes realistic.
Word Choice	Poor Lacking expressive language. Some ordinary 6th grade words are used but even those are limited.	Fair Words are ordinary and lack creativeness. Creating a mental image from the words is difficult to do.	Good Some words are carefully chosen while others seem ordinary or misused. A clear picture is created.	Excellent Words are carefully chosen to create vivid pictures and express clear feelings. All strong words are used correctly.
Mechanics	Poor The writing contained more than 12 errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation. The errors interfere with the story. No paragraphs present.	Fair The writing contained 8-12 errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation. The errors may effect the story's meaning or message. Need for paragraphs.	Good The writing contains 4-7 errors in spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Good use of paragraphs.	Excellent The writing contains 0-3 errors in spelling, punctuation, and grammar usage. Clear and accurate use of paragraphing.
Presentation	Poor No effort in presentation of story.	Fair Presentation makes story difficult to read.	Good Average neatness in handwriting or typing.	Excellent Very neatly handwritten or typed.
