Writing Poetry Rubric 
Used for grading poems written by students. Standard 6: Students read, write, and view texts to examine the choices artists make and to reflect on how their choices affect their audiences. Standard 1: Students use the writing process to produce clear responses to writing tasks that fulfill a variety of purposes and address a variety of audiences.

Most of the poem is creative, but appears to be rushed. This is evident in the poet's redundancy or use of cliches.
Below Standards

Poem appears to be thoughtless or rushed. Work is very repetitive, and ideas are unoriginal.

Exceeding Standards

Vivid, detailed images and intensely felt emotion make the poems come alive.
Meeting Standards

Clear sensory images are used to portray ideas or emotions.
Approaching Standards

Some use of image, idea, or emotion.
Below Standards

Difficult to visualize image or emotion.
Form and length requirement

Exceeding Standards

The poem is complete and follows its intended form. Author delivers a minimum of 38 lines.
Meeting Standards

The poem is written in its proper form with a few mistakes. Author delivers a minimum of 35 lines.
Approaching Standards

The poem is not in correct form but the author delivers 30 lines.
Below Standards

Three or more poems not in correct form and/ or 25 lines or less delivered by the author.

Poetic Devices

Poems demonstrate a fair understanding and use of a variety of poetic devices, all but one device used.
