Thesis/Topic Sentence	Excellent Contains a well developed, arguable thesis/claim which clearly addresses all aspects of the prompt/question.	Good Contains a thesis/claim which addresses the prompt.	Adequate Presents limited, self-evident and/or poorly developed thesis/claim.	Unsatisfactory Contains no discernible thesis/claim or one which does not address the prompt.
Interpretation	Excellent Responses are efficacious and demonstrate excellent comprehension. Claims are fully justified.	Good Responses are mostly accurate and demonstrate good comprehension. Claims are adequately justified.	Adequate Responses are somewhat vague and demonstrate an incomplete comprehension of the topic. Claims are sometimes justified.	Unsatisfactory Answers do not reflect accurate comprehension of the topic(s). Claims are unjustified.
Detail	Excellent Responses are predominantly complete, refined, and include substantial details.	Good Responses are generally complete and include adequate details.	Adequate Responses incomplete but contain some relevant details.	Unsatisfactory Responses lack detail or are incomplete.
Use of Information	Excellent Responses include concise supporting evidence from the text. Quotations are often included, fully integrated, and properly cited.	Good Responses offer some supporting evidence from the text when necessary. Quotations may be included, but not well integrated or cited.	Adequate Answers include sparse supporting evidence from the text and/or isolated quotes and improper or absent citations.	Unsatisfactory Answers do not include supporting evidence from the text.
Clarity	Excellent Responses are confident, clear, concise, and well organized.	Good Responses are comprehensible, focused, and organized.	Adequate Answers are ill-defined and lack logical organization.	Unsatisfactory Answers are incoherent and unorganized.
Mechanics	Excellent Conventional spelling, grammar, usage, and punctuation is mostly correct.	Good Work contains some distracting spelling, usage, grammatical, and punctuation errors.	Adequate Work contains several spelling, usage, grammatical, and punctuation errors which interfere with reader's understanding.	Unsatisfactory Work contains many spelling, usage, punctuation and grammatical errors, rendering writer's purpose unclear.
