Create Watercolor Creature Rubric

This lesson is geared toward upper middle school and high school art. It can be modified to upper elementary by shrinking the size of the paper and using ink pens for the contour lines. For elementary students who have difficulty drawing rectangles, a ruler may be used.

3 Characteristics 10 pts Creature physical characteristics (about the body) including habitat.	Excellent All characteristics were listed correctly and habitat was correct as well.	Good The student included 2 characteristics and may have included habitat. If all characteristics were listed, there were some mistakes.	Fair The student included 1 characteristic and may have included habitat. If all characteristics were listed, there were some mistakes.	Poor The student did not give 3 characteristics about their creature or did not include habitat.
3 Adaptations 10 pts Creature adaptations are described.	Excellent All adaptations were described fully.	Good The student included 2 adaptations. If all were listed, there were some mistakes.	Fair The student included 1 adaptation. If all were listed, there were some mistakes.	Poor The student did not give 3 adaptations for their creature.
Diet 10 pts Student explains what their creature eats and what adaptations it has to eat what it does.	Excellent The student fully described their creature's diet with enough information on adaptations to that diet to show how it would survive.	Good The student gave many diet requirements but not enough information about how their creature would survive off of that diet and included some of the adaptations to that diet.	Fair The student gave too little information about what their creature's diet and may or may/not have included the adaptations it has to that diet.	Poor The student did describe their creature's diet or adaptations to that diet.
Creature Facts 10 pts Chosen creature has interesting fact and all other necessary information (name, gender, number of young etc.)	Excellent All information was correct and noted and extra information on creature was provided.
