Literary Analysis Rubric
Rubric for literary analysis - Student will interpret and analyze a work of literary merit. Students are expected to consider the role of syntax, diction, the effect of voice, tone, and imagery in a work of literary merit. Students may be required to consider the use of symbolism, allegory, and allusion in the work.

Exhibits a valid and in-depth understanding of the topic, audience, and purpose of writing task. Will offer clear, explicit, and insightful interpretations of text with analysis that is sophisticated.
Development

Ideas are presented in a logical fashion. Textural evidence is incorporated within the essay to support each point and to support the overall thesis.
Insufficient

Attempts to some development of ideas, but textual evidence is vague, irrelevant, or unjustified with inconsistent citation. Development reveals little to no understanding of the author's use of language and literary elements. Fails to connect text to analysis.
Partially Sufficient

Exhibits brief or partial development of ideas, using some textual evidence with some form of citation. Exhibits a vague or limited understanding of the author's use of language and literary elements.
Sufficient

Exhibits uneven development of ideas. Some ideas are developed more fully than others using relevant textual evidence that is correctly cited. Exhibits clear and possible insightful understanding of authors use of language and literary elements.
Exemplary

Exhibits fully and clearly developed ideas while integrating and elaborating fully on correctly cited textual evidence.

The writer establishes a clear thesis, and maintains direction, focus, and coherence.

Establishes a clear basic thesis and maintains focus on thesis. Exhibits a clear sequence of claims, evidence, and interpretations, although internal organization or paragraphs may be inconsistent. Uses basic transition words and phrases.

Uses appropriate language with awareness of audience and purpose. Paper has accurate and varied word choice, attempts to choose words that are focused and enhance the message. Sentences are well built and of varying lengths, but nay have limited success.
Exemplary

Uses language that is fluent and original, with a clear awareness of audience and purpose. Word choice allows for a concise and clear message. Varied sentence patterns reveal an awareness of different syntactic structures and enhances the message of the paper.
Conventions

Insufficient

Demonstrates poor understanding of format and lack of control.Frequent errors may make comprehension difficult. Sloppy editing

Demonstrates emerging understanding of format and control, exhibiting errors that somewhat hinder comprehension. Shows basic control, but still struggling with more sophisticated structures.
Sufficient

Demonstrates partial understanding of format and partial control, exhibiting occasional errors that do not hinder comprehension. There are few errors present.
Exemplary

Demonstrates consistent control of format and conventions with few errors and no errors that disrupt meaning. An almost flawless paper.
