Excellent

High degree of creativity. Combined multiple textures and processes to o create an expressive piece. Dramatic features. Represents American Indian motif and design. Tried new techniques in building and finishing. Style is unique.
Good/Proficient

Shows a good level of creativity. Attempted dramatic features. Attempted new process, some American Indian motifs. Good effort, engaged, original.
Fair/Satisfactory

Some level of creativity, goes a little beyond class demonstration, use of techniques. Not a lot of experimentation with additive or carving process. Easy design, mostly copied.
Needs improvement

Lacks creativity, does not go beyond class demonstration of construction. Lacking originality. Sketch is a copy, or no sketch exists. Did not create project with any imagination or care.
Composition, Design, Detail

Excellent

Final piece has great detail. A high level of texture is present. details and exaggerated features appear finished. A great amount of effort in creative hand building and attention to detail is excellent. Looks like it could be a totem.

Techniques learned were used with great skill to create a successful sculpture. Student experimented greatly coil buiding, texture, low and high relief, additive, and subtractive processes. Correct dimensions

Techniques learned were used to create a finished piece. Small features, pieces may have fallen during firing. Student experimented with texture, bas and high relief, exaggerated form. Correct dimension, but form slightly off.
Fair/Satisfactory

Techniques learned were attempted, but some areas needed attention.
Student did not follow directions to build uniform walls and handle. Small pieces may have fallen off (ears, nose etc)
Some of the clay is not uniform thickness.
Needs improvement

Piece has fallen apart in kiln due to lack of techniques used or walls being not uniform thickness. Student did not follow directions for construction. Student did not complete the project. (zero points)
Craftsmanship/ Finish

Excellent

The student totally sealed seams, and refined the cylindrical shape with extreme excellence. Above and beyond scope of project requirements. Excellent care and concern are evident.
Good/Proficient

The student showed clear evidence of sealing and smoothing seams. Shows good solid understanding of hand building method.

Fair/Satisfactory

The student made some progress in trying to seal seams, but poorly done. Hand building method needs more practice. Rough edges, unfinished or thin areas, walls are not uniform.

The student shows no growth. Seams are not put together.. rough. Hand building method poorly done, or otherwise appears incomplete. No care or concern.
Glazing/painting

Excellent

The glaze/acrylic is applied skillfully. The glaze/acrylic was added evenly. All areas that need glaze/acrylic are covered enhancing the sculpture/ piece. GLAZES were used CORRECTLY. Thorough applications.
Totem Indian colors are used.
Good/Proficient

The glazes applied shows careful planning and control. There may be a few areas that need glaze when piece is turned over that are missing glaze. Overall a nice job has been done, but student could have done better. Totem Indian colors used in some areas.
Fair/Satisfactory

Minimal glaze/acrylic neatness. There are areas that are missing glaze/acrylic, distracting from the finished project.
The student did not create the paint/finish experiments in their sketchbook for approval PRIOR to painting. Some sloppy application of paint. Totem Indian colors are not used.
Needs improvement

Piece shows lack of attention. Too much or too little glaze/acrylic has been applied. Glaze/acrylic is sloppy and uncontrolled. distracting from the finished project.
No sketches or plan for painting. Totem Indian colors are not used and the project is NOT finished. Glazing is missing in some areas.
Time/ Effort

Excellent

The student stayed on task, worked hard, and stayed focused to complete the project IN TME given. The student did not distract others. The student exhibited exceptional responsibility.
Good/Proficient

The student stayed on task most of the time, but had to be re-directed by teacher, or was off task. The student distracted others some of the time.
Fair/Satisfactory

The student had to be re-directed several times during course of project, was not on task , and distracted students with excessive talking. The student did not show care or concern- project was not finished on time.
Needs improvement

Poor attitude and unwillingness to learn or be engaged in this project. The small amount of effort evidenced- not finished. Attitude not acceptable, not willing to improve. Did not assist or help in clean up.
Proportion/ Directions/Deadline

Excellent

Animal is correct size, features are proportional, exaggerated, planned, and well designed. Met deadline or finished early.
Animal represents a likeness of a totem, with symbolic colors and shapes
Good/Proficient

Animal has some features, nothing has been experimented however.
Does look somewhat similar in American Indian design.
Met deadline. A few symbolic colors and shapes.
Fair/Satisfactory

Animal appears is (unglazed) and/ or sloppily done, no care or concern. Proportions are not correct, doesn't represent American Indian design. A few days late finishing. No symbolic colors and is not quite complete. Some criteria not met.
Needs improvement

Animal is unfinished. Student did not meet deadline.
Student did not meet criteria in size, color or design.
