The author writes clearly, but has not developed ideas enough for the reader to engage personally with the piece and draw his or her own conclusions or have feelings about the writing.

Sentence Fluency

Not Sufficiently in line with Expec

Mostly correct sentence structure is used, but there are some incomplete or run-on sentences. The phrasing does not add to the piece.
Approaching Expectations

Sentences are technically correct, but not varied. Mostly simple and compound sentences are used. The piece is mostly correct in terms of sentence structure, but lacks fluidity, variety.

Not Sufficiently in line with Expec

Author relies on reader to interpret cliches or phrases such as "It was frightening." Occasionally the author surprises the reader with an insight, but rarely is there any risk-taking or passion.
Approaching Expectations

Voice is starting to support the purpose of the piece, but is inconsistent. Tone is mostly flat and author does not take personal risks.
Meets Expectations
