Choice of Book Students must choose a book that is a "just right" book for them-not too easy, not too hard. It must be long enough to write a report on.	Novice Book is too easy. Below student's reading level. Book is a picture book or comic book. Not enough information for a report.	Apprentice Book is just right for student. May be a picture book. May not have enough information for a report.	Proficient Book is just right for student. Has enough information for a report.	Distinguished Book is on or above student's level. Has plenty of information for a report.
Explain Text Features Students must list the title, setting, characters, problem, solution, and conclusion of their story.	Novice Unfinished Section: 0-2 of 6 features included.	Apprentice Incomplete Section: only has 3-4 of 6 features included.	Proficient Almost there Section: 5 of 6 features included.	Distinguished Complete Section: all 6 features are included.
Summary Section Students must write a complete summary of the story they have read.	Novice No summary or incomplete summary (missing 2 or more elements).	Apprentice Summary is missing one elements: The beginning, middle or end of th story.	Proficient Summary has most parts: the beginning, middle, and end of book. No details are present.	Distinguished Summary has all parts: details from the beginning, middle, and end of book.
Vocabulary Section Students must choose at least 5 unknown words from their book and define them in their book report.	Novice 0-1 Vocabulary words selected from book and defined.	Apprentice 2-3 Vocabulary words selected from book and defined.	Proficient 4-5 Vocabulary words selected from book and defined.
