Scoring guide to measure how well someone has identified and explained a theme from a literary work. This uses a 1 - 4 scale to be in sync with our school's grade scale.

Identifying Theme
	Level 1 = incomplete 1 pts	Level 2 - Getting there 2 pts	3= Close 3 pts	4 - Yes! 4 pts
The Theme Statement	Level 1 = incomplete incomplete, missing, too short, not enough information	Level 2 - Getting there You have identified a theme from this story, but the theme is not supported by the text or is too specific to the story.	3= Close You have identified a possible theme, but you have not made a clear statement, for example: "the theme of the text is the value of friendship"	4 - Yes! You have clearly stated a theme for this text that makes sense for the story.
Evidence/Support	Level 1 = incomplete incomplete, missing, too short, not enough information	Level 2 - Getting there You've given 1-2 details from the text but they may not clearly support your theme.	3= Close You've given 1-2 details from the text that clearly support your theme.	4 - Yes! You've given 3 or more details from the text that clearly support your theme. These details include specific events (things people said & did)
