Writing Free Verse Poetry

Students will write a poem given the "television is..." prompt. Poem will reflect the student's thoughts, feelings, research and will contain figurative language. The poem will be typed in correct format on the word processor.

Poem written in correct format	Poor Poem does not use the assigned format.	Fair Poem has sections where the format is followed, but there are many mistakes.	Good Poem follows the proper format for the most part. There may be a few minor errors.	Excellent Poem follows the format given completely.
Poem uses figurative language	Poor No figurative language used the the poem.	Fair A few attempts at figurative language, but they do not express intended meaning for the reader.	Good Several instances of figurative language that add to the meaning of the poem.	Excellent Many uses of figurative language that lend style to the poem and make the reader understand the intended meaning.
Poem expresses writer's feelings	Poor Poem shows almost no thought on the part of the writer.	Fair Poem is basic and shows very little reflection. The poet's feelings are not revealed.	Good Poem shows some evidence of the author's feelings and reflections. Parts of the poem may be shallow, but most of the poem expresses some depth and insight.	Excellent Entire poem shows reflection and expression of feelings on the part of the writer. It gives real insight into the writer's character.

Good Poem is neatly typed, but the are several mistakes in spelling, grammar and/or format. Mistakes do not detract from meaning.	Excellent Poem is neatly typed, with few mistakes. Spelling, grammar, and format are, for the most part, correct.
