The summary has all the necessary parts (characters, setting, conflict, climax, resolution) so that the reader can get an idea of the story and understand evidence in the body paragraphs. If there is no summary, the essay introduces enough of the story so information makes sense in context.

Student has a complete summary, and in addition, provides context in body paragraphs to make evidence more clear.

There is little or no evidence to support the body paragraphs.

The student uses some evidence in the body paragraphs. Some evidence is not connected to the essay prompt, or some evidence is provided without analysis/analysis presented without evidence

The student bases all evidence on the text and makes connections between the essay prompt and the supporting evidence. Student uses quotes and/or paraphrases with analysis to answer the prompt.
