The summary has all the necessary parts (characters, setting, conflict, climax, resolution) so that the reader can get an idea of the story and understand evidence in the body paragraphs. If there is no summary, the essay introduces enough of the story so information makes sense in context.

Student has a complete summary, and in addition, provides context in body paragraphs to make evidence more clear.
Evidence/Analysis

There is little or no evidence to support the body paragraphs.
Fair

The student uses some evidence in the body paragraphs. Some evidence is not connected to the essay prompt, or some evidence is provided without analysis/analysis presented without evidence
Good

The student bases all evidence on the text and makes connections between the essay prompt and the supporting evidence. Student uses quotes and/or paraphrases with analysis to answer the prompt.

Student skillfully blends evidence and analysis so paragraphs flow well, and arguments or illustrations are clear and compelling. Student uses both quotes and paraphrases.

The student did not use the main idea to bring their paper to a close.

The student used the main idea to end the paper, but did not restate the ideas or wrap up their essay.

The student restated the Thesis and main ideas of their essay, and brought their paper to a natural close.

Student uses the conclusion to drive home arguments and close the essay in a clever and creative way.
