Sentence Writing Rubric
	EXCEPCIONAL 5 pts	SKILLED 4 pts	PROFICIENT 3 pts	DEVELOPING 2 pts	INADEQUATE 1 pts
Capitalization	EXCEPCIONAL Consistently remembers to capitalize the first word and any other words necessary within the sentence.	SKILLED Consistently remembers to capitalize the first word of a sentence and sometimes remembers to capitalize other words within the sentence when needed.	PROFICIENT Consistently remembers to capitalize the first word of a sentence and inconsistently remembers to capitalize other words within the sentence when needed.	DEVELOPING Consistently remembers to capitalize the first word of the sentence.	INADEQUATE Does not consistently remember to capitalize the first word of the sentence.
punctuation	EXCEPCIONAL Is able to use colons, semicolons and quotation marks appropriately.	SKILLED Adds necessary punctuation within the sentence structure.	PROFICIENT Consistently puts ending punctuation and ocasionally adds other punctuation marks within the sentence structure.	DEVELOPING Consistently puts ending punctuation in writing.	INADEQUATE Does not consistently put ending puncuation.
sentence structure	EXCEPCIONAL Writing samples shows complex sentence structure. Uses sentence start consistenly with correct words filled in the blanks.	SKILLED Writing involves compound sentences. Uses the sentence starter consistenly.	PROFICIENT Writing is a complete simple sentence. Uses sentence starter most of the time.	DEVELOPING Writing is a complete simple sentence. Sometimes uses sentence starter.	INADEQUATE Writing sample is a fragment or run/on sentence. Does not use sentence starter.
Neatness	EXCEPCIONAL Good spacing is evident throughout the writing sample.	SKILLED Few spacing errors between words make for somewhat difficult reading.	PROFICIENT Few spacing errors either between words or within words make for somewhat difficult reading.	DEVELOPING Improper spacing between many words in the sentence and/or letters in the words make for difficult reading.	INADEQUATE Improper spacing between all words in the sentence or letters in each word make for very difficult reading.
grammar	EXCEPCIONAL Words used in the sentence are correct all the time.	SKILLED Sentence has subject and verb agreement with 1 error.	PROFICIENT Sentence has subject and verb agreement with 2 error.	DEVELOPING Sentence has both a subject and verb with 3 or more errors.	INADEQUATE Missing a subject or verb.
