General poetry rubric

Students will create a poem following the guidelines of their chosen form of poetry.

Lines The student followed guidelines for the recommended amount of lines in this form of poetry.	Advanced The student followed all directions for his/her chosen form of poetry.	Mastery The student followed almost all directions for his/her chosen form of poetry. The poem may need a few more lines for better completion.	Basic The student followed hardly any directions for his/her chosen form of poetry and turned in minimal work.	Approaching Basic The student did not follow directions for his/her chosen form of poetry at all.
Words You have a dictionary and a thesaurus accessible to you. If you don't use them, you are choosing the lower scores.	Advanced All words were carefully chosen and were spelled correctly. No more than 1 spelling error.	Mastery Most words were carefully chosen and were spelled correctly. 2-3 spelling errors.	Basic Some words were carefully chosen and some words were spelled correctly. 3-5 spelling errors.	Approaching Basic There were no descriptive words chosen and the poem consists of more than 5 spelling errors.
Clarity/Neatness Make sure that what you mean to say is actually what you wrote into your poem.	Advanced Poem is neatly written and easy to understand.	Mastery Poem is written but may lack clarity in some places.	Basic Poem is sloppy.	Approaching Basic Poem is too difficult to read.
