Expressing ideas through dialogue

The student is unsure as to what dialogue is or how to use it in writing.

The student attempts to use dialogue in writing, but the ideas expressed are unclear.
Proficient

The student uses dialogue to express ideas successfully.
Advanced

The student is able to use dialogue that not only expresses ideas but creates a specific mood.

The student is unable to define or use sensory details, even with help.

The student attempts to use sensory details, but they are vague or do not support the writing.

Spelling high frequency words correctly

The student cannot define or spell commonly mispelled words.

The student can define but frequently mispells common words.

The student can accurately spell high frequency words as well as polysyllabic words.

Punctuating dialogue and direct quotes.

The student cannot identify or correctly use dilaogue writing techniques or direct quotes, even with help.

The student attempts to punctuate dialogue and quotes but makes minor mistakes.

The student can accurately punctuate dialogue and quotes in his/her writing.

The student can use dialogue, quote and punctuation to create an artistic effect.

The student is able to vary sentence structure in order to create an effect.

The student is able able to consciously use sentence structure in order to create an effect (mood, tone or theme).
