Character Study	Excellent Squares 1-4: A brief physical and emotional description of four characters are given. The reader understands who four (4) key characters are in the story-who they are and what they are like.	Very Good The reader gets a good idea of who the top four characters are and what role they play, but not enough information is given to identify what they are like as individuals.	Acceptable Four main characters are identified but the reader is left wondering who they are, OR what part they play in the story, OR what they are like as an individual.	Need Improvement It is not clear who the characters are or what role they play in the story. Too much is left to the reader's imagination.
What Happened	Excellent Squares 5-8: Student used four (4) squares to identify four (4) KEY Sequence of Events or Turning Points within the story. Student identifies at least 4 pivotal points in which the key character makes a change. Please use good word choice.	Very Good Four squares were used but it is vague what happened first, second, next and last.	Acceptable Less than four events were identified or points are not clear.	Need Improvement Less than three events were identified or points were repeated.
When	Excellent Square 9: Time frame is completely identified. Where does the action take place, what is it like there at that time? Include multiple places of key events.	Very Good Student omitted either the action taking place at that time/the time frame or/the key events happening at that time.	Acceptable Student omitted either an understanding of where/when the place or setting takes place.	Need Improvement Student does not understand where and/or when this story takes place.
Where	Excellent Square 10-11: The place and setting are completely identified. The reader where and when.. A clear description of time and place is provided.	Very Good The time and place are identified, but some of the descriptions are vague. Student could have made this more clear.	Acceptable Either the time or place has been omitted. The reader is left in the dark.	Need Improvement It is not clear the student read the material. Very unclear.
Why	Excellent Squares 12-15: Student completely explains four key events that lead to how the main character comes to be where he/she is an provides a logical and sequential resolution.	Very Good Student explained less than four convincing events as to how the character comes to life and or a sequential and logical resolution to the problem at hand.	Acceptable Student left too much to the prospective readers' imagination or did not identify four events leading to the climax or the outcome or resolution.	Need Improvement It is not clear that the student understood what happened in the story.
Opinion	Excellent Square 16: Student completely explains and and makes a recommendation to read/avoid reading this book. Supports the statement with 3 details/reasons.	Very Good Student makes a recommendation but provides less than 3 details/reasons to suppor their recommendation	Acceptable Opinion statement is generic in nature. It is not clear that the student event read the book.	Need Improvement Reader is left wondering...did the student read the book?
