Response to Prompt or Assignment	Beginning The student does not address the prompt or use it as a focus or topic for their writing.	Progressing The student attempts to respond to the prompt or assignment, or uses it as the topic for their writing, but the writing is not very clear to the reader.	Meeting The student responds to the prompt or assignment or uses it as a topic for their writing, and the writing makes sense to the reader.	Excellent The student responds to the prompt or assignment, or uses it as the topic for their writing, and uses it in such a creative way that it entices the reader and holds their attention throughout the piece.
Voice	Beginning The student does not show any voice in their writing.	Progressing The student shows some voice in their writing, but it is not consistent, or it is weak.	Meeting It is clear that the student has developed a strong voice in their writing, and that the voice is obvious when reading their piece.	Excellent The student has strong control of their voice in their writing, which engages the reader and pulls the audience in to really understand and appreciate their writing.
