Midterm Exam - Massage Skills Competency Draping Skills Competency In this part we will be evaluating the following categories: 1. Appropriate organization of the massage room and the appropriate organization of work material and supplies. 2. Client draping and boundaries limits that involves the different positions of the client on the massage table. 3. Body mechanics and proper body posture of the therapist. 4. Adequate cleaning and organization of material and supply at the end of the session. Massage Table Set Up

Student presentation and ethics	Excellent Arrives on time, dress/clothing/attire. Professional demeanor/attitude/language. Knowledge of general ethical guidelines, Knowledge of ethical issues specific to site and professional behavior, Shows respect for confidentiality and maturity. /3	Good Student was able to attend his work routine but made some ethical and behavioral mistakes. There are some errors in personal appearance (dress/clothing/attire). /2	Needs Improvement Student was late for his routine and was not able to follow any dress code or ethical protocol. /1
Safety	Excellent Demonstrates the use of properly setting up massage table, by checking the stability of the tables screws and cables. Demonstrates the procedure for adjusting the table height. /3	Good The student demonstrated mistakes regarding the use of properly setting of the massage table and did not properly adjust the table height. /2	Needs Improvement Massage table screws were lose or cable wires were not properly aligned in the grooves. Table height was not adjusted. /1
Sanitize	Excellent Student properly sanitized table, face rest and bolster before placing sheets on. Student used proper hand washing skills prior to competency, and or an alcohol based hand wipe or solution. /3	Good Student made some mistakes when sanitizing table, face rest and bolster before placing sheets on. Student did some mistakes during hand washing skills prior to competency, and or an alcohol based hand wipe or solution. /3	Needs Improvement Students did not follow sanitation guidelines of the table, face rest and bolster. Student did not do proper hand washing prior to competency, and or used an alcohol based hand wipe or solution. /1
Massage table draping skills	Excellent Performs proper table draping skills, by covering the massage table with the appropriates table sheets and blankets. /3	Good Draping skills for the massage table was acceptable with minimal amount of table/equipment exposure. /2	Needs Improvement Draping skills for the massage table was not acceptable with big amount of table/equipment exposure. /1
Client draping skills and Body positioning

Cover client for privacy/security	Excellent Student performs proper draping skills, keeping the client secure and private. /3	Good Student draping skills were acceptable with minimal amount of client exposure, or not holding the sheets securely as needed one time during competency. /2	Needs Improvement Client's privacy and security is not intact numerous times during competency. Student did not securely handle the sheets throughout, and/or not aware of improperly touching the client with a private area of their body. /1
Proper positioning of bolster	Excellent Student properly positions the bolster and face rest. /3	Good Bolstering and face rest positioning needs practice. Student forgot placement of client face rest and or bolster once during the competency. /2	Needs Improvement Bolstering under the client's knees/ankles or face rest is not in position when needed during the competency more than once. /1
Proper procedure for turning client	Excellent Student demonstrates proper procedures for turning the client aver by placing the face rest and bolsters accordingly to the position. Student took the bolster out prior to client turning over. Student securely holds the sheet while the client is turning over. /3	Good Student does not follow the correct procedure order of turning a client over, but does securely hold the sheet while the client is turning over. Some mistakes on placing in and taking out bolsters. /2	Needs Improvement Student forgets to place the face rest and to take the bolster out prior to client turning, and or student needs verbal assistance to take out bolster or place face rest up prior to client turning over, or student does not hold the sheet securely. /1
Communication	Excellent Demonstrates clear communication cues for receiving and turning the client over. /3	Good Student forgets to give the correct cues for the client to seat on the table, go under sheets and turn the client correctly by either not giving correct verbal instruction or a physical cue and/or student is not clear to the client where to place their face. /2	Needs Improvement Student does not give verbal instructions to the client. /1
Fluidity	Excellent Student draping skills are smooth in transitioning to one area of the body to another. Sheets are smooth throughout competency. /3	Good Student fluidity is acceptable with minimal amount of hesitation transitioning from one area to another. /2	Needs Improvement Student needs to practice draping skills for better fluidity in transitioning to one area to another. /1
Handling of the sheets/blanket (P, S, SL)	Excellent Student handles sheets appropriately while maintaining contact with the clients body as it moves (no "catching air"). P = Prone position. S = Supine position. SL = Side Lying position. /3	Good Students make minimal mistakes handling the sheets/blanket by either not undraping the extremities/back appropriately or once catching too much air while performing draping skills. P = Prone position. S = Supine position. SL = Side Lying position. /2	Needs Improvement Student does not control sheets/blanket appropriately during the competency numerous times while exposing/re-draping a body part. (sheets are sloppy or bunched). P = Prone position. S = Supine position. SL = Side Lying position. /1
Arm/Leg/Back Exposure	Excellent Student properly exposes and re-drapes the arms, legs and back correctly. /3	Good Student makes minimal errors while exposing or re-draping the arms, legs and back by not fully uncovering the extremity or by tucking the sheet into the undergarments and asking the client for approval. /2	Needs Improvement Student does not properly expose or drape-re-drape correctly throughout the competency. /1
Body Mechanics

Proper use of body mechanics	Excellent Student demonstrates proper body mechanics using horse/archer stance and avoids upper body strain. /3	Good Student is not consistent with their body mechanics, but corrected themselves as they saw the need to make improvements through the competency. /2	Needs Improvement Student repeatedly used poor body mechanics. /1

Communication	Excellent Demonstrates clear communication cues to complete the routine and give instructions to the client regarding care when getting up from the massage table. /3	Good Student forgets to give clear communication cues for the client when routine was completed. The instructions to the client regarding care when getting up from the massage table were confusing. /2	Needs Improvement Student does not give verbal instructions to the client when massage was completed. /1
Handling massage material	Excellent Appropriate handling of massage material at the end of the massage and appropriate protocol for handling dirty and/or contaminated sheets. /3	Good Inappropriate handling of massage material at the end of the massage and confusing protocol for handling dirty and/or contaminated sheets. /2	Needs Improvement The student was not able to determine or implement the correct protocol for handling the massage material after the routine. /1
Handling massage table	Excellent Student properly sanitized table, face rest, bolster and other equipment used during the massage. Student fold back the massage table and proper stores it. Student took care of the cleaning of the entire massage room. /3	Good Student made some mistakes when cleaning and sanitizing table, face rest, bolster and other equipment used during the massage plus the massage room. Student did not handle the massage table appropriate and did not store it properly. 2/	Needs Improvement The student was not able to implement the correct protocol for handling and sanitizing the massage material after the routine. The student did not clean the massage room. /1
Hand washing skills	Excellent Student used proper hand washing skills after the routine, and or an alcohol based hand wipe or solution. /3	Good Student used hand washing protocol with some mistakes. /2	Needs Improvement The student was not able to implement the correct protocol for hand washing. /1
