Engaging Scenario: Periodic Table Game Rubric
Student must design a game that tests their peers' knowledge of atomic structure and the design of the periodic table. Student may design their game to simulate a game that already exists, or, may make up their own. Student must include a board, questions, and a package that is visually appealing and accurate in its information.

Game Questions

Below Expectations

Questions demonstrate little knowledge of the design and trends of the periodic table.

*No questions written gets zero points.
Working Toward Expectations

Questions demonstrate limited knowledge of design and trends of the periodic table.
Meets Expectations

Questions demonstrate accurate knowledge of how to read each box of the periodic table, location and characteristics of metals, non-metals and metalloids, and number of valence electrons of each group.
Exceeds Expectations

Questions demonstrate knowledge of goal concepts plus reactivity of each group, energy levels of elements in each period.
Game Board and Pieces

Below Expectations

Design of game board is not well thought out, has little visual appeal and shows little or no correlation to the periodic table.

*No board submitted or a board from another game gets zero points.
Working Toward Expectations

The design of game board is general and has visual appeal or is somewhat related to the science content but not very visually appealing. Or, game may be somewhat appealing but missing pieces to play the game.
Meets Expectations

Game board is well designed and neat, visually appealing and related to the periodic table and the elements. Contains all necessary pieces to play the game.
Exceeds Expectations

Has all goal criteria plus: The game board shows advanced effort in making it either relate to the periodic table and the elements or in its creativity or professionalism.
Rules

Below Expectations

The game is difficult if not impossible to play because rules were not well thought out or well written.

*No rules written gets zero points
Working Toward Expectations

The game is difficult to play, but with some explanation or improvisation from designer it can be done.
Meets Expectations

The game is easy to play because the rules are well thought out and well written. The player may have had to ask one or two questions.
Exceeds Expectations

Game is fun to play, creative, or innovative in design. Rules are well thought out and so well written that the player did not need to ask any questions to play the game.
Participation in Playing Games.

Below Expectations

Student was minimally engaged in playing games. Students could answer very few of opponent's questions, given that those questions were valid.

*No Participation in playing and making game gets zero points
Working Toward Expectations

Student was engaged some of the time in the playing of the games. Student could answer some of opponent's questions, given that those questions were valid.
Meets Expectations

Student was engaged most of the time in the playing of the games. Student could answer most of opponent's questions, given that those questions were valid.
Exceeds Expectations

Student was engaged all of the time in the playing of the games. Student could answer all of opponent's questions, given that those questions were valid.
Effort

Below Expectations

Very little effort was put forth toward making a quality game.

*No game submitted gets a zero
Working Toward Expectations

Some effort put forth toward making a quality game, but there was much more the student could have done.
Meets Expectations

Good effort was put forth toward making a quality game. Student satisfied all requirements.
Exceeds Expectations

Effort put forth toward making a quality game was exceeded. The game turned out to be something that could be brought to market!
