There are four clearly written types of paragraphs- narrative, descriptive, classification, and evaluative. All contain a clear statement of the writer's purpose and significance of the events. Clear and concise.

Paragraphs are supported by specific and relevant details. The author works to SHOW NOT TELL. Each paragraph is clearly labeled and grabs the reader's attention in the opening lines. The writer clearly describes the who, when, where, why and how. Images are used.

Paragraphs are supported by a few specific and relevant details. The writer uses some SHOW NOT TELL. The paragraphs are not clearly labeled and do not always catch the readers immediate attention. The writer describes some but not all the who, when, where, why and how.

The paragraphs are supported by general statements. The writer does not use evidence or knowledge of the text to support ideas.The writer generally or briefly describes some of the who, when, where, why and how.
Needs attention

The paragraphs are not complete, There is a slight attempt at support. There is ho hook. The writer does not the who, when, where, why and how.
Organization

Excellent

Paragraph has good organization. Events well ordered, there is a sharp sense of beginning and end. Transition words or phrases are used. Writer uses verb tense to effectively.

Paragraph is organized, events somewhat jump around. Some transition words/phrases are used. Writer uses verb tense adequately.
Developing

Paragraphs have some organization, events jump around, start and end are unclear. Transition words/phrases are not always evident. Writer uses some verb tense.
Needs attention

Paragraph is not organized, events make no sense. No use of time order transition words/phrases. Verb tense is incorrect.
Conventions

Excellent

Writing evidences understanding of proper grammar and use of punctuation throughout. Minimal spelling errors.
Good

Writing contains one or two consistent grammatical errors or incorrect uses of punctuation. Most words are spelled correctly.

Many sentences are characterized by grammatical errors or incorrect uses of punctuation. Numerous simple spelling errors.
Needs attention

Writing does not use proper grammar or punctuation. The number of spelling errors significantly detracts from the readability of the paragraph.
