Informative Speech

Students will research, organise, and deliver a speech dealing with an approved topic; performance will be evaluated in terms of the specific standards set herein, including the main areas of ORGANISATION, DELIVERY, and RESEARCH. TIME LIMIT: 4-6 minutes

Introduction 5 %	Excellent Contained ALL FIVE components of the intro: 1) attention-getter or HOOK, 2) interest-grabber or RELEVANCE, 3) purpose statement or WHY, 4) C+C in first 30 seconds, and 5) preview.	Good Four of the five components.	Decent Three or two components.	Poor One component.	Beastly No intro at all, hmph!
Conclusion 5 %	Excellent Thesis/purpose statement restated. Briefly summarised ALL main points (but not subpoints!). Connected "outro" back to intro (aka "reflecting back").	Good Two of the three components in "Excellent" (purpose, summary, and reflection).	Decent Same as with "Excellent," only using some variation of "That's about it."	Poor Speech concludes with NO summary and NO restatement of thesis. Speaker uses some variation of "That's about it."	Beastly No conclusion at all! :(

Poor Vocal expression needed work in the areas of: volume, pitch, rate, clarity of speech, and vocal variety; could improve in ONE of these. Had 11+ vocalised pauses.	Beastly Couldn't hear/understand speech for a variety of vocalic reasons.
Eye Contact 20 %	Excellent Speaker rarely refers to notes (once for every letter/# on outline). Makes sustained eye contact with all members of the audience.	Good Speaker maintains good eye contact with most audience members, but spoke whilst "fact-checking" 3 times or more. Alternately, referred to notes 2x per letter/#.	Decent Speaker frequently referred to notes; not much eye contact with the audience, or else focused on one person/part of the audience, ignoring the rest.	Poor Speaker either stared down a small segment of the audience, or else barely looked at them. Read 60-80% of the time.	Beastly Read word-for-word (from a manuscript!), looking up less than three times per minute.
Language 5 %	Excellent Speaker uses correct pronunciation, grammar, and articulation. No verbal mis-steps. Complete lack of, like, you know, "improperly-used-real-words."	Good Good command of language, but a few errors in pronunciation, grammar, and/or articulation. 1-5 bits of slang (or unexplained jargon). One to five "you knows" and/or other mis-steps. Nonverbal Behaviours 5 %	Excellent Excellent posture with no swaying. Gestures are smooth and appropriate. There is no fidgeting. The speaker appears completely at ease.	Good Speaker usually maintains good posture, but may sway or lean on the podium. There is a small amount of fidgeting, but the speaker appears mostly at ease. There are a few gestures.	Decent Leaning on podium, fidgeting. There was very little gesturing and/or movement (statue-like), or else too much to seem believable and/or appropriate.	Poor Nonverbals clue audience in on nervousness...in a big way.	Beastly Statue or Broadway audition (in a bad way).
Demeanour 5 %	Excellent All signs point to "Enthusiastic, Confident Expert." Go, you!	Good Mostly confident-seeming and enthusiastic, except for:	Decent Not too enthusiastic-seeming; also (or "instead") seems hesitant, unsure, unprepared in places. OWN your info, my friend!	Poor Even less enthusiastic-seeming; hesitancy and/or unpreparedness is a theme :(	Beastly Broadcasting "I HATE THIS SPEECH!" and "I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M SPEAKING ABOUT!" in a very loud (!!) voice.
