Analytical Essay
	Good 25 pts	Fair 15 pts	Poor 10 pts
Argument	Good Student had a clear thesis statement and developed their argument consistently throughout their paper.	Fair Student had a thesis statement and may have developed their argument with a minor inconsistency.	Poor Student's thesis statement is not clear. Student's argument is inconsistent or was merely summary.
Support	Good Student chose quotes which clearly supported his/her thesis statement. Each quote is followed by an appropriate commentary.	Fair Students chose quotes to support their argument most of the time. Student may have left one quote without accompanying commentary.	Poor Student chose quotes which do not support their thesis statement. Student left more than one quote unsupported by commentary.
Grammar & Language Mechanics	Good Student used appropriate academic vocabulary. Paper contains one or no errors in grammar or usage.	Fair Student used appropriate academic vocabulary most of the time. Paper contains a few minor errors which do not interfere with coherence.	Poor Student used non-academic vocabulary. Paper contained many minor errors or a few serious ones.
Tone	Good Student maintained a properly academic tone consistently throughout the essay.	Fair Student maintained an academic tone throughout most of the essay.	Poor Student was not able to maintain an academic tone. The paper was written in an informal tone.
Met Requirements	Good Student exceeded minimum length requirement.	Fair Student met the minimum length requirement.	Poor Student did not meet the minimum length requirement.
