Dream House Plan
The students will manipulate the regular shapes to construct a dream house floor plan for Miss Fields. The students will have to construct their own layout, calculate the area of each room and the total house, and present their plan to the class. Find area of right triangles, other triangles, quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.

MGSE6.G.1

Novice

The student shows minimal understanding of the content and does not apply the assessment to the actual real-life scenario.
Basic

The student shows some understanding of the content and applies the assessment to some of the actual real-life scenario.
Proficient

The student shows understanding of the content and does apply the assessment to the actual real-life scenario with minimal mistakes.
Excellent

The student shows excellent understanding of the content and does apply the assessment to the actual real-life scenario with extreme detail.
Room Requirements

Students include all rooms requested by the home builder.

Novice

The floor plan is not a composite figure.
Basic

Floor plan is not constructed correctly. None of the shapes are lined up properly.
Proficient

Floor plan has at least three rectangles, two triangles, one parallelogram and one trapezoid.
Only two rectangles or triangles can touch.
There can be no more than two congruent shapes (same size).
Excellent

Floor Plan is made up of more than three rectangles, more than two triangles, and at least two parallelograms and two trapezoids.
Only two rectangles or triangles can touch.
There can be no more than two congruent shapes (same size).
Plan Layout

Students showed creativity within their floor plan. The plan was neat and showed a variety of shapes and sizes.

Novice

Layout is present but unorganized, not in the layout of a house, and does not show correct use of manipulative shapes.
Basic

Layout is present with some organization. Most shapes were regular with some errors of alignment for house formation.
Proficient

Layout is neat, organized and used all regular shapes in the plan for a house with minimal errors.
Excellent

Layout is neat, organized and excelled in creativity used of manipulative shapes with no errors.
Calculations of Area

Students excelled in their calculations of each room of area and the total area of the house layout. No mathematical errors should occur.

Novice

Measured areas of the rooms incorrectly and failed to calculate the total area.
Basic

Measured areas of the rooms correctly, but failed to calculate the total area with some errors.
Proficient

Measured areas of the rooms correctly and the total area with minor errors.
Excellent

Measured areas of the rooms correctly and the total area with no errors.
Participation & Presentation

Students showed participation throughout the assessment and presented their plan with excellence.

Novice

Minimum participation and no presentation.
Basic

Some participation and basic presentation.
Proficient

Participated frequently and demonstrated a proficient presentation.
Excellent

Full participation and excellent presentation of plan.
