Direction and position of the writer is not clear and intention of essay is difficult to interpret or decipher.	Poor No thesis present or thesis extremely weak. Direction and position of the writer not clearly stated.
Examples from text	Excellent Writer uses at least 4 clear examples from the text that accurately support the writer's position and thesis.	Good Writer uses at least 3 examples from the text that support the writer's position and thesis.	Fair Writer uses at least 2 examples from the text and they somewhat support the writer's position and thesis.	Poor Either no examples from text or examples do not support writer's thesis or position.
Grammar/Structure	Excellent Essay formatted correctly with no editing, grammar or spelling mistakes	Good Essay formatter correctly with very few editing, grammar or spelling mistakes.	Fair Essay mostly formatted correctly with several editing, grammar or spelling mistakes.	Poor Essay not formatted correctly and/or many editing, grammar and spelling mistakes making essay difficult to read.
