Excellent

High degree of creativity. Can easily identify the culture or art movement chosen. Dramatic features.
Used Sgraffito Technique and carving to create lines/motif with underglaze. Style is unique.
Good/Proficient

Shows a good level of creativity. Attempted to represent the culture or art movement.
Good effort, engaged, original. Student made the work his/her own.
Fair/Satisfactory

Some level of creativity, goes a little beyond class demonstration, use of techniques. Not a lot of experimentation with sgraffito carving process. Easy design, mostly copied.
Needs improvement

Lacks creativity, does not go beyond class demonstration of construction. Lacking originality. Sketch is a copy. Box is sloppily built, does not have a plan, and doesn't look finished.

Final piece has great detail. A high level of texture is present. sides and/or Back of piece has just as much detail as the front. A great amount of effort in creative hand building and attention to detail is excellent.

Great joinery.
Lid is present and correctly placed.
Student experimented greatly with designing sgraffito techniques to create unified design. There is a variety in line width.

Techniques learned were used to create a finished piece.
Slab may have warped some, but overall a good project with lid and a good attempt at creating unity with sgraffito

Techniques learned were attempted, but some areas needed attention. Small pieces may have fallen off, or there may be cracks from stress in slab construction Slabs do not have uniform thickness.
Needs improvement

Piece has fallen apart in kiln due to lack of techniques used or walls being not uniform thickness. Student did not follow directions for construction. Student did not use time wisely.
Craftsmanship/ Finish

Sgraffito technique, Slab building, care and concern.
Excellent

The student totally sealed seams, and refined the shape with extreme excellence. Above and beyond scope of project requirements. Excellent care and concern are evident. Could teach others the hand building method or scope of project.

The student showed clear evidence of sealing and smoothing seams. Shows good solid understanding of slab hand building method.

The student made some progress in cleaning up and trying to seal seams, but poorly done. Hand building method needs much more practice. Rough edges, unfinished or thin areas, walls are not uniform.

The student showed no evidence of refining the form. Seams are not put together.. Hand building method poorly done, or otherwise appears incomplete. Rough uneven edges, cracks, unfinished glaze.

Glazing/painting

Great finish-smooth and neat.

The underglaze was applied evenly to create surface for sgraffito. The glaze is even. All areas that need glaze are covered enhancing the sculpture/ piece. Experiments were made in sketchbook and CHECKED PRIOR to applying glaze.
Good/Proficient

The underglaze applied shows careful planning and control. There may be a few areas inside box or lid that need glaze when piece is turned. Overall a nice job has been done, but student could have done better.
Fair/Satisfactory

Minimal glaze neatness. There are areas that are missing glaze distracting from the finished project.
The student did not create the glaze experiments in their sketchbook for approval PRIOR to painting. Some sloppy application of paint.
Needs improvement

Piece shows lack of attention. Too much or too little glaze has been applied. Glaze is sloppy and uncontrolled. Large areas are missing glaze distracting from the finished project.
No sketches or plan for surface decoration. Sloppy.

The student stayed on task, worked hard, and stayed focused to complete the project in the time given.
The student did not distract others from learning or have to re-directed by the teacher.

The student stayed on task most of the time, but had to be re-directed by teacher, or was off task. The student distracted others and was not engaged some of the time.
Fair/Satisfactory

The student had to be re-directed several times during course of project, was not on task at least 50% of the time, and distracted students with excessive talking/other.
The student did not show care or concern about effort and the project was not finished in a timely manner. (due 11/6 built)
Needs improvement

Poor attitude and unwillingness to learn or be engaged in this project. The small amount of effort is noticeable in that the project does not look finished. Stayed off task, distracted peers. Did not attempt.
