Essay Structure, Form, and Flow Does the essay read easily and effectively make its point?	Poor The essay is scattered, there is no clear introduction or conclusion, there is no clear thesis, transitions are not included, or the work is simply too short.	Fair The ideas are evident although not clear or deeply discussed, the essay is somewhat structured but difficult to follow, there are some transitions, and there is a thesis.	Good The thesis is clearly stated, the paper is mostly well organized, transitions are apparent but some clarity or deeper analysis is lacking.	Excellent The thesis is clear, the paper is well organized with transitions between quotes and paragraphs, the ideas are analyzed or discussed in depth.
The Amendment Does the student describe the amendment in an effective manner?	Poor There is little discussion of the amendment or it is the incorrect amendment.	Fair The paper includes a minor description of the amendment without substantive discussion.	Good The paper adequately describes the assigned amendment in language suitable to inform a 7th grader.
