Sentence Mechanics	Poor Lack of mechanics leaves the piece difficult to understand.	Fair There are more than 3 mistakes with capitalization and punctuation.	Good There are 3 or less mistakes with capitalization and punctuation.	Excellent There are no mistakes capitalization and punctuation.
Sentence Structure	Poor There is a lack of either subject or predicate in the sentences. There may be run-on sentences. Little sense can be made of the piece.	Fair There are less than 3 mistakes with sentence structure.	Good Most sentences are complete thoughts.	Excellent All sentences are complete thoughts.
Topic Sentence	Poor The writer does not have a strong topic sentence.	Fair A topic sentence is given but it has three or more errors.	Good The topic sentence has three of less errors.	Excellent The topic sentence has no errors and conveys knowlege of the main idea.
Detail Sentences	Poor Only one detail sentence was included.	Fair Two detail sentences were included.	Good Three detail sentences were included but they included more than one errors per sentence.	Excellent Three detail sentences were included with less than one error per sentence.
Concluding Sentence	Poor No concluding sentence was written.	Fair Concluding sentence did not refer back to the topic sentence.
