Supporting details

Does each detail support, or tell more about the topic?

Excellent

Each detail supports, or tells more about the topic. follow up sentences provide additional support.
Good

Each detail supports the main idea but there are no follow up sentences.
Fair

Some of the details support the main idea, but there are some that do not.
Poor

The details do not support the main idea.
Transitions (Linking words)

Do linking words, or transition words, connect details so that the paragraph reads smoothly?

Excellent

Transitions are present and effectively dierect readers from one example to the next. They exhibit sophistication on the part of the writer.
Good

Transitions are present and direct readers from one example to the next though not to the level of excellent. They may be basic and/or confusing.
Fair

Transitions are present but do not effectively direct readers from one example to the next. They may be basic and/or cofusing.

Transitions are not present or do not effectively direct readers from one example to the next.
Logical order

Does the order of the supporting details make sence?

Excellent

The paragraph is developed in a logical order appropriate to the writer's purpose and readers needs.
Good

Most of the paragraph is presented in a logical order, and readers should have little trouble following the supporting details.
Fair

The writer attempts to develop the paragraph in a logical order, but some of the paragraph may be presented in an order readers may find confusing.
Poor

The supporting details within the paragraph as a whole are not developed in a logical order.
Word Choice

Does the writer use vocabulary, target words appropriate to the paragraph?

Word usage is appropriate for the essay and reflects sophistication on the part of the writer. Five of the target used all used appropriately.

There is no conclusion the paragraph just ends without summing up or restating the topic. It doesn't tie the the details together.
Grammar and Mechanics

Does the paper indicate that the writer has control of the rules of spelling, grammar and mechanics

Excellent

The paragraph contains no errors. There is nothing in the spelling, usage or mechanics that is distracting to the reader.
Good

The paragraph contains 1 or 2 errors in usage, spelling and mechanics, but they are not distracting to the reader.
Fair

The paragraph contains 3 to 5 errors in usage, spelling and mechanics, some of which are distracting to the reader.
Poor

The paragraph contains 6 or more errors in usage, spelling and mechanics most of which are distracting to the reader.
