Meaning and Originality	Exceptional Poems are creative and original. It is evident that the poet put thought into their words and uniquely conveyed their ideas and emotions.	Proficient Poems are thoughtful and creative. A couple of phrases or ideas may be revisited, but the overall product is carefully written.	Acceptable Most of the poems are creative, but appears to be rushed. This is evident in the poet's redundancy or use of cliches.	Not acceptable Poems appear to be thoughtless or rushed. Work is very repetitive, and ideas are unoriginal.
Theme	Exceptional The poems have clear, controlling ideas. The themes are clear and identifiable.	Proficient The poems have fairly clear ideas. The themes are fairly clear.	Acceptable The poems do not have clear ideas. The themes are somewhat clear.	Not acceptable The poem's ideas are not clear at all. The themes are not identifiable.
Sensory Details	Exceptional Vivid, detailed images and intensely felt emotion make the poems come alive.	Proficient Clear sensory images are used to portray ideas or emotions.	Acceptable Some use of image, idea, or emotion.	Not acceptable Difficult to visualize image or emotion.
Form	Exceptional The poems are complete and follow its intended forms for example, Hiaku are properly written, rhyme schemes are evident as assigned.
