Organization	Poor Paragraph is not in order. Only one or two transitional words were used.	Fair Some of paragraph is in order. Used 3 to 4 transitional words properly OR the transitional words used were repetitive and/or not varied.	Good Most of paragraph is in order. No steps were forgotten. Used 5 to 7 different transitional words properly.	Excellent Paragraph is in order. Consistently used transition words . Varied use of 8 or more transitional words
Conventions	Poor Lots of errors in spelling and punctuation. Makes the text very difficult to read.	Fair Uses some spelling and punctuation correctly but there are distracting errors.	Good A few errors but most spelling and punctuation are correct.	Excellent There are no errors in grade appropriate spelling or punctuation.
Focus	Poor The writer does not stay on topic.	Fair The writing is somewhat clear but strays a bit off the topic.	Good The writer stays on topic nearly all of the time.	Excellent Writing is consistently on topic and keeps reader interested.
