Meal Plan for a Day 
The students will use their knowledge of the food groups and think critically about Eating Well with Canada's Food Guide to create a menu that applies the concepts included in a healthy diet.

Knowledge: Identifying and Labeling Food Groups

Must have knowledge and understanding of which food group each ingredient comes from. Each meal must include at least one serving of food from two or more food groups. Snacks may include partial portions.

Level 1

Menu does not include which food group each component comes from. Not all meals included food groups. Meal only includes a serving from two or less of the food groups.
Level 2

Menu includes a list of food groups of where some of the components of their meal comes from. Some understanding of food groups, but needs further understanding. Meal only includes a serving from two to three of the food groups.
Level 3

Menu includes a list of food groups that most of the components of the meal comes from. Good understanding of the five food groups with only reference to some of the food items. Meal includes a serving from three to four of the food groups.
Level 4

Menu includes a list of food groups that each component of the meal comes from. Great understanding of the five food groups, with the ability to explain which food group every food item comes from. Meal includes a serving from all five food groups.
Knowledge: Serving Size/ Dietary Requirements

Each menu item must include the serving size for each of the components of the meal.

Level 1

Menu does not include any serving sizes for any of the components of the meal. Choice of servings are not in accordance to Canada's food guide. Does not meet daily recommended number of servings for any of the food groups.
Level 2

Menu includes serving sizes for some of the components of the meal. Sometimes selects the correct amount of servings according to Canada's food guide. Meets daily recommended number of servings for 1-2 of the food groups.
Level 3

Menu includes serving sizes for most of the components of the meal. Usually selects the correct amount of servings of each food according to Canada's food guide. Meets daily recommended number of servings for 3-4 of the food groups.
Level 4

Menu includes servings sizes for all the components of the meal. Frequently selects the correct amount of servings of each food according to Canada's food guide. Meets daily recommended number of servings for all food groups.

Each main meal must include healthy food. Menu analysed for its health

Level 1

Menu is not healthy.
Menu needs further analysis of health benefits. Not all meals included what nutrients were contained. Rarely demonstrates an understanding of how meal plans can be used to achieve nutrition goals.

Menu is healthy with some components that are not so healthy. Menu analyses health benefits. Some understanding of the basic nutrients but were not able to specific the nutrients of all food items. Sometimes demonstrates an understanding of how meal plans can be used to achieve nutrition goals.
Level 3

Menu is healthy with most all components being healthy. Menu analyses health benefit and makes connections and inferences to the world. Good understanding of the basic nutrients in each food item. Usually demonstrates an understanding of how meal plans can be used to achieve nutrition goals.
Level 4

Menu is healthy with additional ideas such as water throughout the day as an additional component of a healthy diet. Menu analysis makes insightful connections and inferences to the world. Great understanding of the the basic nutrients that come from food, with the ability to explain the purpose of the nutrient. Demonstrates a thorough understanding of how meal plans can be used to achieve nutrition goals.

Students need to include an organized menu with portion size and food group chart

Level 1

Menu needs to be more organization with portion size and food group chart. Adherence to CFG not explained.
Level 2

Menu is organized but portion size and food group chart matching portion size to food guide food group quantity is not accurate. Adherence to CFG barely explained.
Level 3

Menu is mostly organized with portion size and food group chart matching portion size to food guide food group quantity. Adherence to CFG explained somewhat for every meal.
Level 4

Menu is well organized with portion size and food group chart matching portion size to food guide food group quantity. Adherence to CFG explained in excellent detail.

Menu layout is excellent. Meal descriptions were detailed, containing every single food item in the meal. Also include images. Excellent level of spelling and grammar with no visible errors.
