African Masks
This lesson's goal is to make a 3-dimensional mask using clay and relief design techniques. Students creatively express an authentic looking tribal mask demonstrating their understanding of the elements and principles of art and culture.

The mask was a 3-dimensional sculpture using cardboard and paper sculpture techniques to express an authentic-looking Tribal Mask.
Good
Most of the mask is sturdy, but when displaying it, there are a couple of pieces that might need extra care.

The mask is flimsy and falls apart easily. It may not last for display.
Creativity
Excellent
Totally original design and elements. Mask successfully uses symmetry, balance, pattern and unity. Color, composition, and decorative details enhance the mask.
Good
Most of the mask elements are unique, however, a few may have been copied. The mask has some resemblance to an authentic Tribal Mask.
Poor
The mask does not resemble those found in the chosen culture.
Structure
Excellent
Students successfully employed 3 or more layers on their mask to represent the 3-dimensional quality.

Students used 1-2 layers on their mask and most seem to represent the art of Africa.

Craftsmanship
Excellent
Great care and time were given in the design of the mask. The elements and principles of art are clearly evident. The mask is aesthetically appealing and shows no flaws.

The mask design was well thought out and planned using the elements and principles of art. There are a few flaws marks, and added materials, but these do not detract from the overall look.
Poor
The mask looks thrown together at the last minute. It appears that little design or planning was done.

Museum card is correct size, neat, and lists all the appropriate information required.
Good
Museum card is missing some information.
Poor
Museum Card is poorly done and lacks the basic information required.
