	Above Average 3 pts	Average 2 pts	Below Average 1 pts	Poor 0 pts
Format Book letter needs to have the date, a greeting, and a closing.	Above Average Response is dated correctly and has the proper greeting and closing.	Average Response is missing 1 of the following: date, greeting, or closing.	Below Average Response is missing 2 of the following: date, greeting, or closing.	Poor Response is lacking all of the following: date, greeting, and closing.
Summary Book letter needs to have a summary of what was read.	Above Average A fully developed and strongly on-topic summary of what was read is written in paragraph form.	Average An acceptably developed and on-topic summary of what was read is written in paragraph form.	Below Average The summary is underdeveloped and does not remain on topic.	Poor Summary has not been completed at all.
Answers to Questions Book letter needs to have answers to the questions asked by the teacher in the previous response.	Above Average Answers to questions are fully developed and strongly on-topic.	Average Answers to questions are acceptably developed and remain on-topic for the most part.	Below Average Answers to questions are underdeveloped and do not remain on-topic.	Poor Answers to questions have not been completed at all.
Connections Book letter needs to make a connection. (Use idea starters)	Above Average Student makes a text-to-text, text-to-self, or text-to-world connection and explains connection fully.	Average Student makes a text-to-self, text-to-text, or text-to-world connection but does not explain connection fully.	Below Average Students attempts to make a text-to-self, text-to-text, or text-to-world connection but does not provide an explanation.
