Clay Slab Soap/Trinket dishes 
Students use the slab hand building method to create a soap or trinket dish expressing their own unique creativity. Students use texture and/or additive sculpture and glaze to design their dishes.

The student failed to create any type of unique characteristics with clay or other decorative materials.
Progressing to Grade level

The student attempted one or two unique characteristics with decorative materials. Copied others.
Grade level

The student created a plate using all characteristics from clay leaving the plate unique or used decorative materials to finish the piece. Some copying ok.
Grade Level with Excellence

The student created a unique dish like no other in the class using clay only and or decorative materials.
Craftsmanship/Refinement

Attempts Grade Level

The student showed no evidence of refining the form. Dish not smoothed. Bottom of plate and other areas not cleaned up.
Progressing to Grade level

The student made some progress in cleaning up. Top smoothed but the bottom of dish is messy with clay pieces and cuts.
Grade level

The student cleaned up top of dish completely. The bottom still needs refinement somewhat.
Grade Level with Excellence

The student totally cleaned top and bottom of the both dishes.
Craftsmanship/Firing

The student created an air bubble which completely destroyed the whole dish to a million pieces.

The student created an air bubble but the dish survived in at least one or more larger pieces.

The student created a dish with no air bubbles but some pieces may have fell off.

The student created a dish with no air bubbles.
Finish/Glazing

Attempts Grade Level

The student applied the glazes with missed areas being evident. Bald specks. Shows no thought process of applying glazes.
Progressing to Grade level

The student applied the glazes with many less areas being obviously missed. Bald specks still showing. Some thought of how to apply glazes but poorly done.
Grade level

The student shows evidence of having a plan for glazing the dish. Lines are defined and cleanly done. Few bald specks.
Grade Level with Excellence

The student had a evident plan in glazing the dish. Lines are done with purpose. Overall skill handling is excellent. No bald specks.
Finish/Aesthetics

Attempts Grade Level

The student threw the dishes together and is unpleasing to view. No evidence of a thought out design.
Progressing to Grade level

The student attempted with some design to create a pleasing art form but failed to bring overall expressive features out in the dish.
Grade level

The student's dish shows evidence of a thought out design and is pleasing to view.
Grade Level with Excellence

The student's dish shows excellent use of design and is beautiful to behold.
Project Completion

One or no dishes are complete. The dish needs lots of work to be finished.
Progressing to Grade level

There is only one dish finished and it is adequate quality, or both are complete but lacking in qualities.

There are two finished dishes. Both are excellent in all categories.
