Identification of SETTING

Emerging

The learner provides an incorrect answer or no response when asked to give the setting of a story.
Developing

The learner can only give one element of the setting, orally or in writing.
Applying

Student can give the important elements of the setting.

Student can give the important elements of the setting and explain why these are important to the story.

Identify Conflict & Resolution

Student can correctly describe the conflict and solution and why these are important to the story.

Student can compare and contrast the conflict and solution in two or more stories, drawing on specific details in the text.
Identification of Characters

The learner provides an incorrect answer or no response when asked to name the characters of a story.
Developing

Student may name a character, but does not correctly identify the main character(s).
Applying

Student can identify all main characters, but cannot explain why these characters are important to the story.
Innovating

Students adequately identifies main character and supporting characters with supporting details.
5th grade

Student can compare and contrast two or more characters in a story, drawing on specific details in the text.
Identification of Plot

Emerging

The learner provides an incorrect answer or no response when asked, "What is the plot of this story?"
Developing

Student can identify the situation.
Applying

Student can give the situation and resolution, but cannot express climax or turning point.
Innovating

Student can give: the situation, a rising action, the climax, and the resolution.
5th grade

Student can compare and contrast two or more plots, drawing on specific details in the text.
