Current Events 
Purpose: Students will inform the audience about current events of the world. Students will shape their own opinion about the event and will promote discussion by asking and answering questions. Students will refine their presentations skills.

Article is thoroughly summarized in student's OWN words. Summary answers all of the required questions and adds extra details.
Opinion

Level 1

Student has not included an opinion or has included an insufficient opinion. He/She shows limited understanding of the issue.
Level 2

Student includes a brief opinion about his/her article. The opinion is backed up using some facts in the article, prior knowledge, or personal connections. He/She has a satisfactory understanding of the issue.
Level 3

Student describes his/her opinion about the article. The opinion is backed up using facts from the article, prior knowledge, and making personal connections. He/She has a good understanding of the issue.
Level 4

Student confidently describes his/her opinion about the article. The opinion is backed up using numerous facts from the article, prior knowledge, and personal connections. He/She has an excellent understanding of the issue.
Presentation

Level 1

Student simply reads from note cards. Student makes limited or no eye contact. Pacing, clarity, and volume are inconsistent. Student is able to answer basic questions with limited responses.
Level 2

Student is somewhat prepared and uses notes several times for presenting. Eye contact, pace, clarity and volume are satisfactory. Student is able to answer some questions regarding the article.
Level 3

Student is prepared and is somewhat comfortable presenting information. Eye contact, pace, clarity and volume are good. Student is able to answer questions about the article.
Level 4

Student is very well prepared. Student shows confidence by consistently making eye contact, speaking in a clear, loud voice and using a steady pace. Student is easily able to answer questions regarding the article.
