Gothic Short Story Presentation Writing a Gothic Short Story Students are to write a short story that demonstrates their understanding of the stages of plot and the characteristics of a short story. Writing a Short Story

Setting	Excellent Setting establishes an atmosphere of suspense or terror. The mood is clear and definite.	Good Setting adequately establishes an atmosphere of suspense or terror, but the mood is not clearly defined.	Fair Setting poorly establishes an atmosphere of suspense or terror. Mood is not appropriate for Gothic stories.	Poor Fails to provide an atmosphere. No mood is created by the setting that is fitting for a Gothic story.
Events	Excellent Events are clearly violent and gruesome.	Good Events are somewhat violent and gruesome.	Fair Very little violence or gruesome events.	Poor Story fails to include this elements of Gothic stories.
Character	Excellent The story depicts at least one character who is physically or mentally tormented in some way.	Good The story somewhat depicts a tormented character, but lacks specific details to illustrate him/her.	Fair The story very vaguely illustrates a character in torment. Fair The story occasionally uses some descriptive words which creates a vague sense of danger.	Poor The word choice is very weak and does not adequately describe in vivid images.
Presentation	Excellent Student presentation contributes strongly to the overall effectiveness of the story.	Good Student presentation contributes adequately to the effectiveness of the story.	Fair Student presentation does not contribute to the effectiveness of the story, but doesn't necessarily detract from it either.	Poor Student presentation harms the overall effectiveness of what might otherwise been an good Gothic story.
