Value Composition in Graphite Composition demonstrates students ability to create an Illusion of volume/form using the element of Art:Value/ principle of composition. Composition uses all shapes/forms studied; value is added using one or more of the methods taught in class (value scale only)Composition shows at least 3 values of shading and includes Principles of Shading: highlight, shade, shadow, reflected light . Composition fills 50% or less of the paper.
Composition is not well planned. Some objects appear third dimensional. Some (at least half of) objects have a clear sense of volume.

No clear thought to composition- appears to be a sketch or study.
Composition fills less than 50% of the paper.
Objects do not appear to be third dimensional or have a sense of volume.
Technique/Value

EXCEEDS

Clearly and consistently shows varying values from one light source.
Consistently
Shows 3 or more different values of shading. Includes all principles of shading: highlight, shade, reflected light and a wide range of values. Consistently blends values.
PROFICIENT

Tries to show varying values from one light source. Shows 2-3 values of shading. Missing some areas of value. Composition shows highlight, shade and at least one other principle of shading. Mostly blends values.
BELOW AVERAGE

Shows little range of values (1-2). An obvious light source is not evident.
Much of the drawing has no shading on it. Some values are blended well.

Little to no shading is apparent.
Shows some contour and cross-contour lines.
Composition is more about Line and not Value. Values are not consistently blended.

Great pride and care has been taken by the student to present a neat, unmarred final composition. Edges of forms are sharp.

Composition shows some lack of care- slightly crumpled, unwanted marks or smudges. Some edges of forms are sharp.
BELOW AVERAGE

Composition shows greater lack of care- multiple creases or crumpled, smudges, etc. Most edges are not finished or sharp.
IN-PROGRESS

Composition shows signs of neglect that demonstrate the student's lack of pride in the work. Edges of forms not reformed.
Effort

EXCEEDS

The student put forth extraordinary effort to complete the project as well as possible; used class time extremely well.
PROFICIENT

The student put forth the effort required to complete the project well; used class time well.
BELOW AVERAGE

The student put forth minimal effort required to finish the project; used class time inadequately.
IN-PROGRESS

The student put forth little effort or the project was not completed; class time was not used well.
