Language Arts Class Participation Grade Criteria

Below is a chart that shows you exactly how your class participation grade will be evaluated. All students are expected to participate in class! Students should understand that their participation mark begins at 0 and then is built up through active participation. Students DO NOT automatically receive a perfect participation mark at the beginning of the term and then "lose points" through non-participation.

Attendance & Punctuality	Excellent EXCELLENT<BR> Student is always on time and regularly attends classes.	Good GOOD<BR> Student is late to class twice or less and regularly attends classes.	Fair FAIR<BR> Student may or may not attend class regularly (three absences per trimester) and may be late sometimes.	Poor POOR<BR> Student has four or more absences in the trimester and often late to class.
Preparation & Organization	Excellent EXCELLENT<BR> Student is always prepared for class with materials and submits required assignments punctually. Student takes notes without being prompted .	Good GOOD<BR> Student is usually prepared for class with assignments and required materials, sometimes submitting some assignments late. Student may need to be prompted to take notes.	Fair FAIR<BR> Student is often unprepared for class with assignments and/or required materials, often submitting assignments late. Often, student needs to be prompted to take notes and file them properly.	Poor POOR<BR> Student is unprepared for class with assignments and required materials, submits assignments late if at all. Student needs to be prompted to take notes and file them properly.
Level of Engagement and behavior	Excellent EXCELLENT<BR> Student asks good questions, frequently participates in pair/group discussions.	Good GOOD<BR> Student asks questions, and usually participates in pair/group discussions.	Fair FAIR<BR> Student rarely participates in class, struggles with pair/group discussions.	Poor POOR<BR> Student does not participate in class, does not participate in pair/group discussions.
Attitude	Excellent EXCELLENT<BR> Student always presents a positive attitude towards the class, their fellow students, and their teacher. Never complains, always willing to try.	Good GOOD<BR> Student usually presents a positive attitude towards the class, their fellow students, and their teacher. A little complaining, usually willing to try.	Fair FAIR<BR> Student sometimes presents a positive attitude towards the class, their fellow students, and their teacher. Much complaining and balking at new assignments or tasks.	Poor POOR<BR> Student rarely presents a positive attitude towards the class, their fellow students, or their teacher. Refusal to comply; complains at everything.
Behavior	Excellent EXCELLENT<BR> Student always behaves appropriately with other students and teacher, both inside and outside the classroom. Student exhibits excellent self control at all times.	Good GOOD<BR> Student usually behaves appropriately with other students and teacher, both inside and outside the classroom. Exhibits acceptable self control (physical and verbal) most of the time.	Fair FAIR<BR> Student sometimes behave appropriately with other students and teacher, both inside and outside the classroom. Struggles to control self either physically or verbally.	Poor POOR<BR> Student does not behave appropriately with other students and teacher, whether inside or outside the classroom. Exhibits little or no physical and/or verbal self-control
