Book Report 11: Comparison of 2 books by one author 
Students will read two books of at least 200 pages each written by the same author, and present a 5-paragraph report on the book. The first paragraph will be the introduction, the second paragraph will explore the similarities between the books, the third paragraph will explain how the books are different, the fourth will explain which book is better and why, and the fifth paragraph will be the conclusion. Students will have an extra typed copy to be projected on the board during the presentation, or 10 points will be deducted from the final grade. 10 points will be deducted if this self-graded rubric is not turned in with the presentation. Due date: May 31, 2011.

The student began with an appropriate hook that related to the thesis statement, followed by at least one sentence explaining the hook, and at least one more leading to the thesis, with the author clearly stated and the title properly formatted. Student developed a thoughtful thesis statement which contained the main points of the essay. The student restated the thesis in the conclusion, mentioned key ideas/connections, and answered the question "so what?"
Satisfactory

The student began with a hook that did not relate to the thesis, or gave insufficient explanation in the thesis, or did not mention the author, or not properly format the title, or created an ineffective thesis. The student restated the thesis in the conclusion, but did not answer the question "so what?"
Unsatisfactory

Three or more of the following problems in the introduction and conclusion: lack of appropriate hook, insufficient explanation, no mention of author, title improperly formatted, ineffective thesis, no review of key ideas/connections, no answer to the question "so what?"
Content

Excellent

The student followed paragraph content directions. The student began each body paragraph with a topic sentence which clearly related back to the thesis. Student used at least three examples of textual evidence, with at least one quotation and at least one paraphrase of the text, properly citing page numbers. Student stayed on topic developing his/her argument, and included effective transitions between body paragraphs.
Satisfactory

The student followed paragraph content directions, but did not begin with a topic sentence that related back to the thesis, or did not follow the textual evidence requirements, or did not stay on topic, or did not use transitions between body paragraphs.
Unsatisfactory

Three or more of the following problems: content directions, textual evidence, staying on topic, lack of topic sentences, lack of transitions.
