Purpose and Originality

Level One

Poem appears to be thoughtless or rushed. Work is very repetitive and ideas are impersonal or unoriginal.
Level Two

The poem demonstrates some creativity, but some ideas or phrases are repetitive or impersonal.
Level Three

Poem is creative and original. It is evident that the poet put thought into their words and innovatively conveyed their ideas and emotions.
Grammar

Level One

There are numerous spelling or grammar errors, making the poem difficult to understand.
Level Two

A couple of spelling or grammar mistakes are evident, but do not diminish the meaning of the poem.
Level Three

Proper use of modern English spelling and grammar is employed consistently throughout the poem.
Concrete vs. Abstract Language

Level One

The poem uses little or no concrete or sensory language; does not paint a picture in the reader's mind. Poet "tells" rather than "shows."
Level Two

The poem uses some concrete language to help the reader understand the emotions being expressed. Some images may be vague or trite.
Level Three

The poet consistently incorporates concrete language into the poem to help the reader feel the emotions being expressed.
Figurative language

Level One

The poem did not include any figurative language or literary devices, such as alliteration, simile, metaphor, onomatopoeia, etc.
Level Two

The poem uses figurative language or literary devices once. OR the poem uses figurative language/literary devices, but uses them improperly.
Level Three

The poem incorprates two or more different types of figurative language or literary devices throughout the poem.
Grammar/Spelling

Level One

Five or more grammatical, spelling, punctuation, or usage errors.
Level Two

Two to four grammatical, spelling, punctuation, or usage errors.
Level Three

No more than one grammatical, spelling, punctuation, or usage error.
