Setting	Needs Work Student is unclear as to the story setting, but makes an attempt.	Progressing Student identifies 1 setting (school, Sally's house, etc.).	Meets Expectations Student identifies 2 or more specifics: (time, places, geographic locations).	Exceptional Student meets expectations, plus includes cultural setting (southern plantation, rural small town, etc).
Characters	Needs Work Student names the main character.	Progressing Student identifies the main character and 1 additional characters.	Meets Expectations Student identifies main character and other characters, indicating a relationship to the main character.	Exceptional Student identifies protaginist and antagonist of the story.
Genre	Needs Work Student makes an attempt, with prompt, but confuses fiction with nonfiction.	Progressing Student correctly identifies the book as fiction or nonfiction, with prompt.	Meets Expectations Student correctly identifies the book as fiction or nonfiction, without prompt.	Exceptional Student further identifies type of fiction/non fiction (biography, folk tale, etc).
Problem/Focus	Needs Work Student is unsure or incorrectly identifies the story problem/focus.	Progressing Student gives a clear statement of the main problem/focus of the reading, with prompt.	Meets Expectations Student gives a clear statement of the main problem/focus of the reading, without prompt.	Exceptional Student includes a second problem encountered by characters in the story's subplot.
Summary	Needs Work Student's summary lacks a clear beginning, middle, and end.	Progressing Student's summary has a beginning, middle,and end, but lacks details or is too wordy.	Meets Expectations Student's summary has a clear beginning, middle and end and includes a few important details.	Exceptional In addition to expectations, student indicates the climax of the story.
