Spacing and Layout

Accomplished 4

Letters feel connected and look exactly like the selected font type. The overall composition occupies the space of the paper in a balanced way- negative and positive space work together to "hold the shape" of their given fracture (1 or less fractures have more negative space than positive)
Skilled 3

Letters feel somewhat connected and look mostly like the selected font type. The overall composition occupies the space of the paper- most words hold their space, but a few (2 or less) may have more negative space than positive.
Emerging 2

Some letters are connected and resemble the selected font type. Margins and space around letters is too much or too little: the balance between positive and negative space is not consistent. Stacking rather than conforming to the shape is seen in 3 or more areas.
Limited 1

Students has had great difficulty connecting the form of the fonts to the fractured areas. Negative space far out-weighs the occupied positive space of the lettering. Many letters are stacked or 'floating' in the negative space.
Formation of letters/fonts

Accomplished 4

All letters are "bubble", block, or able to hold color. All letters are related in their shape and form to the fracture. All letters/fonts are true to form and do not repeat. The typography (calligraphy) is recreated according to the guide page. Letters show a consistent thickness per space.
Skilled 3

Letters are "bubble", block or have space that allow for the addition of color. Letters are mostly related in their shape and form to the fracture. Letters/fonts do not repeat or look alike. Various font styles are used and mainly consistent in line weight and look.
Emerging 2

The letters are able to accept color in some form. The letters/fonts fit into the fractured area but some may not fully use the space. Few font styles repeat, but line weight may not be consistent throughout each space. A solid attempt has been made to recreate given font styles.
Limited 1

Letters are inconsistent - there are no outline attempts and are unrelated in shape and form. Some fonts/letters can not have color added. Same font is used over and over, or the image and the drawing do not look the same.
Craftsmanship

Accomplished 4

Presentation of the work is clean and neat with no stray marks, smudges, wrinkles or curled edges of paper. The student has taken great care to replicate smooth even outlines on all areas: fractures have a thicker black outline, while the fonts are outlined with a thinner black. Fill work is kept inside the outlines and background color is consistent in pressure throughout.
Skilled 3

A few stray marks or smudges are evident but do not greatly detract from the overall appearance of the lettering. The student has taken care to outline fractures and fonts with smooth black lines. Fill work has stayed within the lines in most places (less than 3 places overrun the outlines). Background has even pressure throughout.
Emerging 2

Many stray marks or smudges are evident but do not greatly detract from the overall appearance of the lettering. The student has outlined both the fractures and fonts in black, but lines may have areas of waviness. Fill work is acceptable, but has multiple areas of overrun.
Limited 1

The amount of stray marks, smudges, or paper imperfections detracts from the overall appearance of the finished piece. The student has rushed the finishing work and create a "messy' or unbalanced effect. The outlining is inconsistent with excessively wavy uneven lines. The fill work has overrun the outline in many areas.
Application of previous knowledge

Accomplished 4

An exceptional amount of work was completed including multiple drafts and attempts for the final project. Students was receptive and responsive to feedback and used the interactions to improve final piece. The application of color is done in a manner that embraces color theory ideas and formulas.
Skilled 3

An abundance of work was completed in reworking the fonts to conform to the given space. Students was receptive and responsive to feedback. Color use is closely related to the theories learned previously.
Emerging 2

An adequate amount of rework was completed. Student was receptive to feedback, but may not have attempted suggestions. Color is applied and some aspects of color theory are seen in the finial version.
Limited 1

Little rework was completed: Students was not receptive to feedback, disregarding suggestions. Few concepts of color theory are seen in the fill work
Creative thinking

Accomplished 4

Student makes informed choices in the selection of materials and techniques that relate to solving a visual problem. Word placement is relative to the fractured areas selected, creating conformity.
Skilled 3

Student makes purposeful choices in the selection of materials and techniques as they relate to solving a visual problem: words and spaces work together.
Emerging 2

Student applies the elements and principles of art and design using a variety of media to solve specific visual art problems in a mostly successful application: most words are in spacing that can accommodate them.
Limited 1

Student is still having difficulties applying the elements and principles of art and design using a variety of media to solve specific visual art problems: words may be too large or too small for the selected space and would have worked better in another ares. Understanding of space/texture/line needs revisited to ensure mastery.
