Building a Musical Instrument Project 
Students will research and create an authentic and original instrument from one of the following instrument families: Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion, Strings. The instrument cannot be an old instrument that you "fix".

Exceeds Standard

The instrument of music distribution is well-constructed. It is sturdy, neat,decorated and will stand up to repeated playing over a period of time.

The instrument reflects some effort on construction. It is reasonably sturdy and neat, somewhat decorated and will stand up to being played more than once.
Approaches Standard

The instrument reflects some alteration to an existing form to "make" the instrument, may be fragile, and may not stand up to being played more than once. There may be an absence of decoration.
Below Standard

The instrument reflects an existing form with little or no alteration. Pieces may be missing or falling off. Seems "slapped together" in a hurry. There may be a total lack of decoration.
Quality of Sound

Exceeds Standard

Student can produce good-quality sounds on the instrument of music and is able to explain how the sound is produced.
The quality of sound allows the listener to understand notation and the family of music.
Meets Standard

Student is able to produce a good-quality sound on the instrument with no explanation given.
Approaches Standard

Student is able to produce a basic sound on the instrument. No explanation given.
Below Standard

Student is unable to produce a sound on the instrument.
Instrument Family

Exceeds Standard

Student can accurately state whether this is a string, wind, brass, or percussion instrument and explain why.
Meets Standard

Student can accurately state whether this is a string, wind, brass, or percussion instrument but cannot explain why without prompts.
Approaches Standard

Student cannot accurately state whether this is a string, wind, brass, or percussion instrument.

Others are unable to understand what family the instrument belongs.
Below Standard

Student cannot determine what type of instrument s/he built even with teacher prompt.
Presentation / Demonstration

Exceeds Standard

Student included all components required in the presentation. He or she did so without prompts from the teacher.
Instrument of music is unique and non traditional.
Meets Standard

Student included most components required in the presentation without prompting from the teacher.
Approaches Standard

Student includes some components required in the presentation without prompting. There is little motivation seen.
Below Standard

Student has to be prompted to provide any components required in the presentation. There is a lack of motivation seen.
