Log Splitter Welding Project 
Students in Grade 12 are tasked with manufacturing a log splitter. The final test is to determine whether or not the log splitter cuts/slices wood and welds hold.

Fair

Project design shows student has some, but not much, understanding of procedures and magnets and 90-degree jigs, clamps or magnets were not used.
Good

Project design shows student has a good understanding of procedures and is able to create a piece that is close to the plans/steps given. Students used magnets, 90-degree jigs, clamps or magnets for some of the project.
Excellent

Project shows student fully understands procedures. Is capable of cutting and layout of pieces to fit and you can tell that jigs, clamps or magnets were used, and student took their time.
Craftsmanship

Quality of workmanship

Fair

Not very particular with how the product looks or how well it functions. Does only what is absolutely necessary. Does not pay attention to details. Project is poorly finished.
Good

Likes to see a finished and functional product at the end of fabrication. Will leave items out even though there is time to correct. Project is mostly finished with slight alignment issues.
Excellent

Takes pride in his/her work.
Keeps working until problems are figured out and the desired results are achieved. Pays attention to the small details. Project is properly positioned and finished well.
Weld Quality

Weld consistency and accuracy.

Fair

Most welds are inconsistent and splotchy. Weld splatter is noticeable. Not much attention is given to clean the welds with a grinder for a finished look.
Good

Most welds are positioned appropriately and accurate for the design. A few areas of unclean welds that don't penetrate and fuse the metal properly. Grinding finish is scratchy with minor weld spatter.
Excellent

All welds appropriate and accurate to the design. Welds fully penetrate and are consistent in size and quality. Grinding finish is smooth. No weld spatter.
Tool Usage

Ability to utilize tools to create a product

Fair

Student is able to utilize the tools to create a product, but does not maintain consistent proper usage which effects final product outcome drastically.
Good

Project shows the student needs some more help understanding how to use the tools properly to have a well-produced product. They know how to use it, but cuts are not straight, blade is dull, a lot of assistance was needed for example.
Excellent

Project shows the student has a full understanding on proper and consistent use of the tools to create desired effects. Safety was also followed.
Accuracy / Measurement

Ability to use measurement tools to maintain accuracy

Fair

Project shows student is not utilizing the measurement tools properly and project is not square.
Good

Project shows student is not utilizing proper measurement techniques all of the time. Overall project accuracy is acceptable and mostly square
Excellent

Student shows ability to utilize measurement devices to create a product that is accurate to the technical drawing and square to 90 degrees.
