Composition

– there should be primary evidence of balance and or emphasis supporting the composition & overall layout.

Below Basic 10

BELOW BASIC
The objects do not fill the page well at all. Objects are placed randomly - feels haphazard. The composition has not been considered. Lots of unactivated space in the background.
Basic 15

BASIC
objects don't fill the page as well as it could have. The composition has been somewhat considered with some evidence of thought supporting the overall composition.
Some background is activated.
Proficient 20

PROFICIENT
The page is filled with some of the objects. Objects are arranged to create balance. Evidence of consideration supporting overall composition. Most of the background is activated.
Advanced 25

ADVANCED
The composition is well organized creating balance, showing symmetrically or asymmetrically with a clear focal point, and is skillfully supported by consideration for a cohesive overall composition. Beautiful use of activated background space.
Proportion and Space

There is consideration given to the proportion of
objects (scale and size in comparison to each other) and objects relationship to each other in terms of space (overlapping, negative spaces) and possibly meaning

Below Basic 10

BELOW BASIC
Few of the objects are proportionally correct from height to width. There is no overlapping or consideration of negative spaces.
Basic 15

BASIC
Most of the objects are proportionally correct from height to width. There is some overlapping of objects and reference to negative spaces between them.
Proficient 20

PROFICIENT
All the objects are proportionally correct in reference to each other. They are realistically overlapping with consideration given to spaces between objects.
Advanced 25

ADVANCED
All of the objects are proportionally correct in reference to each other and the background. Work illustrates sensitivity to spaces between and around objects.
Shading and Shape

Include a range of 6-8 values that describe the three-dimensional forms. The contours of the forms and textures are accurately rendered through use of value, shading techniques and/or contour line.

Below Basic 10

BELOW BASIC
Few of the objects are shaded and most of the objects do no reflect the actual contours, shading is lacking and is not creating depth.
Basic 15

BASIC
Objects are shaded and most of the objects reflect actual contour of objects. Evidence of 5-6 values.
Proficient 20

PROFICIENT
Highlights reflect actual highlights from shading, and all of the objects reflect actual contours. Evidence of 6-8 values.
Advanced 25

ADVANCED
Varied value range of darks, highlights, and mid tones, and all of the objects reflect the actual contour (shape). Uses shading to create edges and lines (vs. drawing them) – use eraser as a drawing tool both to create highlights, shapes, lines and, atmospheric perspective/spatial awareness.
Craftsmanship

The work is well crafted. Attention to detail and well developed values.

Below Basic 10

BELOW BASIC
The amount of stray marks, smudges, or paper imperfections detracts from the overall appearance of the lettering. No attention to the finer details.
Basic 15

BASIC
A few stray marks or smudges are evident but do not greatly detract from the overall appearance of the lettering. Details need attention and improvement.
Proficient 20

PROFICIENT
Presentation of the work is clean and neat with no stray marks, smudges, wrinkles or curled edges of paper. Clear evidence of attention to detail, could be pushed a bit further, 'finishing touches"
Advanced 25

ADVANCED
Presentation of the work is exemplary. Great attention to detail, darks and highlights are strong, creating contrast and overall excellent value.
Layout

Still life arrangement is composed intentionally to create a balanced and visually interesting drawing.

Below Basic 10

Arrangement was not well executed.
Proficient 20
