Minimal evidence of a topic. The topic is not clearly defined. Insufficient line of thought.

No apparent controlling idea but evidence of a specific topic. The topic is too broad for the scope of assignment. Shows difficulty with analyzing the topic.

No singular point made about a specific topic with some evidence of analyzing the topic.

Distinct controlling point made about a single topic with evidence of critical analysis and synthesis of sources used.

Apparent point made about a specific topic that shows the ability to analyze the topic and sources used.

Does not make evident specific knowledge gained from research/sources. Lacks background information on the topic.

Demonstrates little knowledge gained from research/resources. Uses very little research jargon. Includes a partial review of the background on the topic.

Demonstrates some knowledge gained from research/resources.
Uses some research jargon. Mostly shows relationship between studies that provide background information and questions major issues.

Demonstrates knowledge significant knowledge gained from research/resource.
Does not use one form of research jargon. Relationship between research/studies made apparent throughout the essay

Sophisticated analysis of the research and synthesis of ideas from multiple sources.
Accurately uses research jargon. Clear about the relationships between studies evident throughout the essay.

Minimal control of grammar and mechanics; contains 7 or more ( of each) punctuation, spelling, and grammatical errors. Inappropriately documented ideas and concepts.

Limited control of grammar mechanics; contains 5-6 (of each) punctuation, spelling, or grammatical errors. In-text citations that lack clear references throughout the essay. Some are general and/or artificially based.

Control of grammar and mechanics; contains 2-4 (of each) punctuation, spelling, or grammatical errors. In-text citations evident, but citation style is inconsistent.
