Original Sonnet or Villanelle Writing Rubric 
Students select the form of poem and write an original sonnet or villanelle based on that structure. They are expected to employ various poetic devices and produce a polished piece of poetry.

Literary Elements (Imagery, Tone)

Excellent

Imagery, diction, and tone are concrete and appeal to multiple senses. The poem personifies thoughtful descriptive language, interesting imagery, and an appropriate tone according to the poet's intent. Memorable and thought-provoking.
Good

Some concrete images arise in the reader's mind. The poem is good, but not memorable. A cursory usage of descriptive language with more than two appeals to the senses.
Poor

Imagery, diction, and tone are somewhat interesting. Few senses are realized in the language of the poem. The poem is somewhat thought out. Tone is somewhat developed, yet not strong enough to be truly memorable.
Unacceptable

Usage of imagery, diction, and tone is slim to non-existent. Instances of such are derivative and not well thought out. Few, if any, senses are used to create concrete images. Tone is either off-mark or not apparent. No thoughtfulness perceived.
Figures of Speech (Metaphors, etc.)

Metaphors and similes are fun, interesting, and original. Figures of speech give meaning and depth to the literary elements while actively engaging the reader. Multiple examples of such exciting language.
Good

Metaphors and similes are interesting and somewhat memorable. A good balance of both, yet none truly stand out.
Poor

Some metaphors and similes are present. They are not derivative, yet they also are not truly creative. Too little of one of the figures of speech and too many of another.
Unacceptable

Metaphors and similes are few and far between, with no thoughtful employment of comparison.
Sound Devices (Rhyme, Alliteration)

Rhyme, alliteration, consonance, and assonance create a flowing, organic musical quality to the poem. Multiple thoughtful, well placed, and easy to hear examples in oral reading.
Good

Good usage of sound devices. Some devices give the poem a nice flow, yet they are too far apart to make the poem cohesive as a whole.
Poor

Cursory usage of sound devices, with some nice usage of alliteration, assonance, etc. While decent, the poem still lacks a certain musicality that would make it flow better.
Unacceptable

Little to no usage of sound devices. Musicality of poem is nonexistent. The poem trudges along and is truly unvaried.

Poem has an engaging title. It is faithful to the overall theme of the poem. It is evident that the poet put thought into the diction and was innovative in conveying the ideas and emotions of the sonnet. Revision is thoughtful and apparent.

Poem is thoughtful and creative. A couple of phrases or ideas may be revisited, but the overall product is carefully written. Good, thoughtful revision between drafts. Title is good.
Poor

Poem shows a fair amount of originality and thoughtfulness, yet it is sprinkled with cliche ideas/idioms. Some revision between drafts has cursory language, imagery, and sound quality. Title is uninteresting.
Unacceptable

Poem shows virtually no originality or voice. Little to no revision was made between the drafts. Poem has little imagery and sound quality. No title. The poem is not creative and appears to be rushed. This is evident in too obvious meaning and a lack of originality.
Formal Usage of Language

No punctuation or spelling errors. Shows a strong grasp of poetic language through creative use of punctuation.
Good

Few grammatical errors that do not distract the reader. Punctuation is congruent with the tone of the poem.
Poor

Errors are noticeable. Spelling and punctuation are fair yet not reflective of student's skills. Poem is readable, yet mistakes distract the reader. Punctuation usage is acceptable for tone of poem.
Unacceptable

Punctuation and spelling is poor and not reflective of student's true capabilities. Poor mechanics interferes with the poem's readability. No apparent revision done in mechanics.
Understanding of Form

Poem strays somewhat from the proper form of a sonnet or villanelle (pending which form is chosen). There are at least 10 lines of poetry, generally follows iambic pentameter (9-11 syllables) and has generally followed a rhyme scheme.
Unacceptable

Poem strays significantly from the proper form of a sonnet or villanelle (pending which form is chosen). There are fewer than 10 lines of poetry, does not follow iambic pentameter (less than 9 syllables) and has not followed any rhyme scheme.
