Exemplary

Student follows directions to prepare a mini-ecosystem that includes water, mud, producer (algae), and consumer (insect) from local wetland.
Proficient

Student follows most directions to prepare a mini-ecosystem that includes water, mud, producer (algae), and consumer (insect) from local wetland.
Satisfactory

Student prepares a mini-ecosystem with water, mud, producer (algae), and consumer (insect) from local wetland without following directions provided for proper amounts.
Basic

Student prepares a mini-ecosystem without following instructions and missing at least one essential component from the wetland
Incomplete

Student prepares a mini-ecosystem without following directions, missing components instructed, and/or disrupted jar preparation for class.
Unsatisfactory

No evidence of individual jar preparation for mini-ecosystem
Journal

Exemplary

Submitted journal evidences daily observations of the mini-ecosystems including the control and variable ecosystems.
Proficient

Submitted journal evidences at least 4 weekly observations of the mini-ecosystems including the control and variable ecosystems.
Satisfactory

Submitted journal evidences at least 3 weekly observations of the mini-ecosystems including the control and variable ecosystems.
Basic

Submitted journal evidences at least 2 weekly observations of the mini-ecosystems including the control and variable ecosystems.
Incomplete

Journal contains less than 2 observations weekly for the prepared ecosystems.
Unsatisfactory

Journal was not submitted evidencing observations.
Observations

Exemplary

Observations are made daily that contain what is being observed in the individual ecosystem as well as student ecosystems that contain variables.
Proficient

Observations are completed on ecosystems with variables and the individual ecosystem, but missing up to two days of observations.
Satisfactory

Observations were recorded on all ecosystems 3 times a week
Basic

Observations evidence weekly observation and/or minimal observations were only done on the individual ecosystem and not the ecosystems with variables.
Incomplete

Observations do not evidence weekly observation and/or minimal observations were only done on the individual ecosystem and not the ecosystems with variables.
Unsatisfactory

Journal observations were not submitted
Organization, Spelling, and Grammar

Exemplary

Journal observations are clearly marked with date, label of ecosystem observed, and description of what is observed in the jar in complete sentences. No spelling or grammar issues evidenced.
Proficient

Journal observations are marked with date, label of ecosystem observed, and description of what is observed in the jar in complete sentences. One or two spelling or grammar issues evidenced.
Satisfactory

Up to 3 journal observations are missing the date, label of ecosystem observed, or description of what is observed in the jar in complete sentences. One to three spelling or grammar issues evidenced.
Basic

3-6 Journal observations are missing the date, label of ecosystem observed, or description of what is observed in the jar and are not written in complete sentences. Up to 5 spelling or grammar issues evidenced.
Incomplete

More than 6 journal observations are missing the date, label of ecosystem observed, or description of what is observed in the jar and are not written in complete sentences. More than 5 spelling or grammar issues evidenced.
