Reading Resonse
	Level 4 4 pts	Level 3 3 pts	Level 2 2 pts	Level 1 1 pts
Thesis Statement is usually a single sentence somewhere in your first paragraph that presents your argument to the reader. The rest of the paper, the body of the essay, gathers and organizes evidence that will persuade the reader of the logic of your interpretation.	Level 4 Thesis is precise and addresses the prompt accurately and with specificity.	Level 3 Thesis addresses the prompt.	Level 2 No sign of a thesis, but the writing is focused.	Level 1 No thesis or detectable direction in the response.
Supporting Evidence	Level 4 Student response has several examples which support the thesis.	Level 3 Student response has at least two examples which support thesis.	Level 2 Student response has at least one example to support the idea stated and/or support given in not clear.	Level 1 Student response does not have any examples to support their stated thesis.
Original thought/ideas	Level 4 Student response includes analysis, synthesis, creativity and/or critical thinking.	Level 3 Student response includes original thought which shows critical thinking.	Level 2 No original thought. The response is all summary or all text examples.	Level 1 Unrelated thoughts which do not support the evidence and/or the prompt.
Language and Conventions	Level 4 Reading response is written with above grade level vocabulary and sentence structure. A consistent use of grade appropriate puctuation and capitalization is demonstrated.	Level 3 Reading response is written with grade appropriate sentence structure and vocabulary. Grade appropriate puctuation and capitalization is usually demonstrated.	Level 2 Sentence structure and vocabulary is continuing to develop. Some use of grade appropriate puctuation and capitalization is demonstrated.	Level 1 Sentence structure and vocabulary is below grade level. A limited use of grade appropriate capitalization and punctuation is demonstrated.
